Sunday July 3rd proved a perfect day for the return of the perennially popular Open Gardens. Record numbers of visitors were treated to a glimpse into twenty two completely different gardens. From the inspiration offered by the tiniest hidden courtyard ablaze with colour to terraced gardens with spectacular views to surprisingly spacious town gardens offering exuberant borders, dappled shade and wildlife areas. This year saw the first ‘out of town’ entrant at Rhiew Goch farm and many took the opportunity to enjoy the well established borders. Fine open views in every direction complement the garden which is also a most productive one for the table.  Visitors were invited to enjoy tea and home made cakes in the lovely walled gardens of either Institute or Wynnstay House and pop-up music from home-grown talent Monty Folk added a sparkle to the day. Always difficult to pick a date when gardens may be at their best,  particularly with such variable weather,  but early July certainly provided a feast for the eye this year. Next week hosts will have an opportunity of a private viewing of each other’s gardens. The day raised well over £1,900 which will be shared between the Mayor’s charity, DPJ Foundation for Rural Mental Health and Montgomery Show. No doubt a number of the gardens will be contesting for the Best Garden award at the Show in August. - Jill Kibble
